There are 2 major platform that providing hosting and server to host on
Unix are more efficient it to perform of site and onsite where windows
does not   provide very good efficiency to work.  it provide   lower hosting cost for the web hosting the high bandwidth whereas windows take more
resources and have the cost higher for the storage purpose it is better
for the website that are static and include html and graphics the window
in Unix are used for heavy website and having more requirement it supports
the scripting languages like Php and database like my SQL and other
related category whereas windows supports its cold fusion and big application that take more space. Linux and Windows are two of most used operating systems that are used for web hosting.
Both are very popular and have pros and cons of their own.

Linux is based on UNIX (a programming language) and an open source OS which is suitable for hosting of websites based on php, html, etc. It is most widely used OS, most secure, freely available and it even provides ability to make changes in its source as per your requirements. Linux has a very big community and forums where every technical help is freely available.

Windows on the other hand is most suitable for hosting of dot net websites or if you want to run any windows specific application on your server. It is very much secure and provides direct technical support. But, it is costlier and does not provide access to source code. But, it has given rise to its special windows web hosting.
They are two different OS system hosted on two different platforms. Unix are offered on OpenVZ whereas Windows are hosted on Xen platforms. Unix offers more security to your server and hosting compared to Windows, but Windows are easier to operate and use with less troubleshooting.
